Client Feature: Hackergal

Hackergal is a Canadian charity with a mission to change the face of computer science and pave the way for a technology industry that is diverse and inclusive of girls and young women in underrepresented groups across Canada. Hackergal partners directly with education systems and organizations across the country, providing educators, facilitators, and parents with the tools they need to expose girls to coding education in their schools, communities, and at home at an early age!

Woven into everything Hackergal does is their commitment to reach more girls in more places, with a focus on BIPOC communities, French-speaking Canada, and northern, remote and rural Canada. Hackergal uses an inclusive definition of “girls” and “women.” Hackergal welcomes the participation of everyone who identifies as girls including trans students, as well as genderqueer, and non-binary students.

Hackergal was in need of legal support related to various projects including student privacy and data collection as well as student participation at a national level.

The team at Caravel, including Dan Black and Connie Chan, provided the support Hackergal was looking for. Dan helped Hackergal build out various HR policies as a growing organization and Connie helped draft legal agreements that supported the use of software and programs for the youth they work with. The Caravel team was able to handle Hackergal’s legal needs, allowing them to focus on what matters most to them – inspiring girls to explore the possibilities in code and pave the way for a more equitable future.

"It was a wonderful experience working with the Caravel Law team. The team is detailed in helping us find the right lawyers to support our legal needs as a charitable organization from start to finish. They took the time to understand our unique needs and made sure to provide customized solutions."
